What is Water Industry Professionals Association ?

Who We Are

The Water Industry Professionals Association (WIPA) Continuing Professional Development scheme was jointly established by the Water Industry Operators Group  and Water New Zealand and is supported through a Service Level Agreement by Connexis (Infrastructure ITO). A copy of the Association rules can be found HERE .

 

What We Do

The WIPA CPD scheme provides for a system of registering and recording the continuing professional development of employees working in the reticulated water industry who hold certain nominated qualifications. It has been set up to ensure and maintain a high level of competency within the industry.

 

The Management Committee

The Management Committee comprises:

  • Two members representing the Water Industry Operations Group of New Zealand Incorporated (Craig Hiddleston, Executive Officer , and John Clemens, WIOG Committee)

  • Three members representing Water New Zealand members, two of which must be involved in Territorial Local Authority asset management (Nick Hewer-Hewitt, Wellington Water; a member of the Water Services Managers Group and Vicki McEnaney, Water New Zealand)

  • Two members representing New Zealand Civil Contractors (Graham Bennett, City Care; Jasper Snyder, Downer)

  • One representative from the Industry Training Organisation representative of the reticulated water industry (Annie Yeates, Connexis)

  • One representative of water equipment suppliers (Craig Freeman, Filtec)

 

What is Continuing Professional Development?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the purposeful maintenance and improvement of a professional’s knowledge and skills to remain competent in their chosen profession for the benefit of themselves, their employers or customers and the wider profession. CPD is recognised as a commitment to being professional, keeping up to date and continuously seeking to improve.

 

The key principles behind CPD are that

  • it builds on an individual’s existing knowledge and experience

  • it links an individual’s learning to their work

  • it is self-directed and based on learning needs identified by the individual

 

Background

The water industry recognises the critical and key roles operational staff play in the operations and maintenance of water and wastewater networks. By implementing a professional registration programme, we can provide assurance to stakeholders that our drinking water and waste disposal is operated and maintained by registered trades-people, who have the necessary skills, qualifications and competency.

 

Members of WIPA (or WIPs – Water Industry Professionals) will be employees of organisations responsible for operating and maintaining water or wastewater treatment plants and reticulation, and employees of organisations responsible for constructing water and wastewater assets. In other words, local authorities and contractors.

 

Initially, registration will be voluntary, but the aim is to have mandatory registration within local authorities and their contractors in the future.
